Giants Win Extra Inning Thriller Over Dodgers

Giants Win Extra Inning Thriller Over Dodgers

Giants Edge Dodgers in Extra Innings Despite Early Struggles

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants (75-72) pulled off a dramatic win over the Los Angeles Dodgers (82-65) despite struggling offensively for much of the game, making 23 consecutive outs between the first and ninth innings. With the victory, the Giants remain just a half-game behind the New York Mets, who are enduring a seven-game losing streak.

San Francisco’s Justin Verlander delivered a strong outing, allowing just one run on four hits over seven innings. Joel Peguero (2-0) sealed the win with a scoreless 10th inning.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Dodgers’ right-hander, also pitched impressively, surrendering only one run on one hit and one walk over seven innings while striking out 10. He retired the last 20 batters he faced and has now thrown at least seven innings with 10 strikeouts in three consecutive starts.

Michael Conforto provided Los Angeles’ lone offense with a seventh-inning home run, tying the game at 1-1. However, the Dodgers missed a key opportunity to close the gap in the NL West and trail the San Diego Padres by 2½ games.

The game turned dramatic in extra innings. Dodgers left-hander Tanner Scott allowed a walk-off grand slam to Bailey, marking the third walk-off hit he has surrendered in the team’s last four road games. Right-hander Blake Treinen (1-4) took the loss.

San Francisco nearly won in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and one out. Wilmer Flores hit a fly ball to shallow center, but Dodgers’ Andy Pages threw out pinch runner Grant McCray at home, preserving the tie. The Giants also faced a double play in the 10th when McCray threw out Ben Rortvedt at third, trying to advance on a Mookie Betts fly ball.

The Giants struck first in the opening inning thanks to an error. Rafael Devers walked with one out, and Willy Adames doubled. Pages misplayed the ball in center field, allowing Devers to score.

The Dodgers’ Max Muncy left the game in the eighth after being hit on the left arm by a Joey Lucchesi pitch. Muncy, who had only his first hit since Aug. 11 in the sixth inning, was playing in just his 11th game since July 3 due to a knee bone bruise and an oblique injury.

Despite early struggles, the Giants’ resilience paid off, handing Los Angeles a tough loss and keeping the NL West race wide open.
