Wilson Reflects on Giants’ Loss, Emphasizes Team Focus Ahead of Cowboys Clash

New York – Giants quarterback Russell Wilson delivered a candid assessment of his team’s performance following a tough loss to Washington, acknowledging mistakes while pointing to small signs of optimism.

Wilson completed 17 of 37 passes for just 168 yards and narrowly avoided a costly fumble. The Giants were outgained 432-231 and managed only 4 conversions on 16 third-down attempts, highlighting struggles on both sides of the ball.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Wilson noted that despite the final score, the game remained close deep into the fourth quarter, giving him reason to stay positive. At the same time, he admitted he expects more from himself.

“I think the biggest part of that game was the red zone, ball on the one—we’ve got to get the ball in,” Wilson said. “We’ve got to find ways to score down there. This game was 14 to 6 with like six, seven minutes to go. We had two opportunities down there, and we didn’t get it done. I didn’t play good enough. I think you always want to play better. Whenever you don’t win, you always feel like there’s more to do.”

Wilson, a 14-year veteran and 10-time Pro Bowler, also addressed the growing calls for backup quarterback and first-round pick Jaxson Dart, who could start in future matchups. Wilson, however, remains confident in himself and the team, particularly after head coach Brian Daboll confirmed he will start in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys.

“I think that you embrace challenge,” Wilson said. “I don’t run from challenges. I know how confident I am in myself; confident I am in the guys that we have.”

The Giants’ running game struggled as well, with Wilson ending up as the team’s leading rusher—a sign that the ground attack did not go as planned. Combined, New York’s running backs managed only 30 yards on 15 carries, averaging 2.0 yards per attempt.

“It’s not about me, it’s about us as a collective group,” Wilson said. “If we can play a little cleaner on first and second down… we had so many second-and-longs and third-and-longs. It’s hard to win that way, but we still had a chance to win. That’s the crazy thing. We still had a chance to win down there, and that’s what we’ve got to clean up and do.”

As the Giants turn their attention to Dallas, Wilson’s focus remains on improving execution and keeping the team’s morale high, despite a challenging season opener.
