Over 250 Tourists Rescued Amid Flash Floods in Gilgit-Baltistan, Search for Missing Continues
GILGIT-BALTISTAN – Rescue teams have successfully evacuated nearly 250 tourists to safer locations following severe flash floods triggered by a cloudburst in the region. The joint operation, involving local volunteers, police, district administration, and the Pakistan Army, continues as officials search for 10 to 15 people still reportedly missing, according to eyewitness accounts.
Faizullah Faraq, a spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, confirmed that the search efforts would persist under directives from the Chief Minister until all missing individuals are located.
In Chilas, authorities have arranged free accommodation for those rescued. Despite the difficulties posed by darkness, rescue teams made substantial progress overnight. Officials also stated that all individuals shown in video footage of vehicles swept away by floodwaters have been found safe.
Tragedy in Astore
In a separate incident in the Boalan area of Astore district, flash floods caused massive destruction and claimed the life of a woman.
Wider Relief Efforts Underway
Relief operations are ongoing in Thore, Diamer, where stranded tourists in the Deosai region have also been rescued. Meanwhile, administrative teams continue relief efforts in the Ghizer district, where assessments of damage to property and infrastructure are in progress.
Authorities urge residents and tourists in mountainous regions to remain cautious as weather conditions remain unpredictable.
