Hunza Floods 2025 Thousands Stranded
Severe Flooding Hits Hunza Valley, Thousands Stranded
Hunza Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, is facing devastating floods after a combination of melting glaciers and heavy monsoon rains swept through the region. On August 12, a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) from Shisper Glacier caused the Hassanabad Nullah to overflow, damaging roads and infrastructure and putting homes on the mountainside at risk.
The situation worsened when another flash flood struck the Gulmit Gojal area, halting repair work on the Karakoram Highway (KKH) and leaving thousands, including tourists, stranded.
Experts say the region is experiencing extreme challenges, with temperatures soaring nearly 50% above normal. The unusually high heat has accelerated glacier melting, further intensifying the flooding.
Rescue operations are currently underway, but authorities warn that the situation remains critical. Residents have been urged to stay alert and prepared for any additional emergencies.
