Imran Khans Bail Hearing Delayed in May 9 Riots Case
Imran Khan’s Bail Case Postponed by Supreme Court Until August 12
ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan has delayed the hearing of Imran Khan’s post-arrest bail case until August 12.
A two-judge bench, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, made this decision during a hearing on Monday. The delay came after Imran Khan’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, asked for more time.
Another lawyer for the PTI founder, Salman Akram Raja, requested the court to hold the hearing next week and also issue notices. However, the court refused both requests.
Why Is Imran Khan in Court?
Imran Khan has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against a decision by the Lahore High Court (LHC). Earlier, the LHC rejected his post-arrest bail in eight cases linked to the May 9 riots.
The LHC had said there was not enough reason to grant bail. Imran Khan then approached the Supreme Court for relief.
In his appeal, the former prime minister said the allegations against him were false. He claimed he was in NAB custody in Islamabad during the May 9 violence, so he could not have been involved.
What Happened on May 9?
On May 9, 2023, Imran Khan was arrested, which led to nationwide protests by his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The protests turned violent in some areas. Government buildings, including the Corps Commander’s House in Lahore, were attacked. The military was called in to restore order in Punjab, KP, Balochistan, and Islamabad.
The bail cases against Imran Khan include attacks on:
Jinnah House
Askari Tower
Shadman Police Station
