Indonesia Protests Turn Deadly UN Demands Probe
Deadly Protests Rock Indonesia as UN Calls for Probe
JAKARTA – At least six people have been killed in Indonesia since protests broke out last week, triggered by the circulation of video footage showing a young delivery driver allegedly killed by a paramilitary police unit.
The Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS) reported on Monday that 23 people were initially declared missing. After search and verification efforts, 20 remain unaccounted for. Most of the disappearances were reported in Bandung, Depok, and across Greater Jakarta, with one case linked to an undisclosed location.
The United Nations has urged Indonesia to investigate allegations of excessive force by security forces during the demonstrations.
The unrest, which has spread across multiple cities, marks the most serious wave of protests since President Prabowo Subianto took office 10 months ago. Mounting pressure has already forced him into a U-turn on controversial perks for lawmakers.
On Monday, the military was deployed throughout Jakarta as hundreds of protesters once again rallied outside parliament. Clashes were also reported in several other cities, raising fears of further escalation.
