Iran IAEA Resume Nuclear Cooperation Amid Rising Tensions
Iran Reaches Agreement with IAEA After Months of Tension
Vienna – Iran has reached a deal with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Tuesday, restoring cooperation that had been suspended following the war with Israel in June.
The 12-day conflict earlier this year involved Israeli and US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, leaving the IAEA unable to access key sites.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi described the agreement as a step toward clarity, saying it “provides a clear understanding of the procedures for inspections.” He added that the deal “includes all facilities and installations in Iran and requires reporting on the attacked sites, including the nuclear material present there.”
Tehran’s suspension of cooperation had previously forced IAEA inspectors to leave the country, though a small team returned last month to oversee fuel replacement at the Bushehr nuclear power plant. Access to other critical sites, such as Fordo and Natanz—which were struck in June—remains subject to approval from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
Grossi said the renewed cooperation would be “respectful and comprehensive,” but acknowledged that challenges remain. “Practical steps need to be implemented now. There may be difficulties and issues to resolve, but we now know what we have to do,” he told the agency’s Board of Governors in Vienna.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that the cooperation could end if Iran faces “any hostile action,” including the reinstatement of UN Security Council resolutions. “In such a case, Iran will consider these practical steps ended,” he said.
Tensions have been rising after Britain, France, and Germany initiated moves in August to reimpose UN sanctions, citing Iran’s failure to comply with its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal. Iran condemned the move as “illegal” and cautioned that it could jeopardize European participation in future negotiations.
