Isak Nets First Liverpool Goal as Reds Win
Isak Scores First Liverpool Goal in Win Over Southampton
Liverpool’s £125 million ($169 million) signing Alexander Isak finally opened his account for the club, netting his first goal in his third appearance since joining from Newcastle on transfer deadline day.
The 26-year-old had yet to find the net in his previous two outings, including a 58-minute debut against Atletico Madrid and a late substitute appearance in Saturday’s Merseyside derby victory over Everton.
Isak broke his duck in the 43rd minute when Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy’s attempted short pass was intercepted by Federico Chiesa, who squared the ball for the Sweden international to slot home. The goal also served as a belated birthday gift for Isak, who turned 26 on Sunday.
Having scored against Liverpool for Newcastle in last season’s League Cup final, Isak was substituted at halftime to manage his fitness, having missed pre-season while his transfer was finalized.
Southampton pulled one back in the 76th minute through Shea Charles, who capitalized on a misplaced header from Liverpool’s Wataru Endo to score from close range. Liverpool’s dominance was restored in the 85th minute when substitute Hugo Ekitike finished Chiesa’s pass, though he was sent off for removing his shirt in celebration.
The result maintained Liverpool’s perfect start to the season, with seven wins across all competitions, including five in the Premier League and a Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid.
Chelsea Survives Scare Against Lincoln
Chelsea came from behind to defeat Lincoln in a rare clash that saw the two sides meet for the first time since 1911. Manager Enzo Maresca made eight changes following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, leaving his team vulnerable.
Lincoln took the lead in the 42nd minute after a defensive lapse by Chelsea, with Ivan Varfolomeev intercepting a careless pass from Enzo Fernandez and setting up Rob Street for a composed finish.
Chelsea responded early in the second half, with Tyrique George striking a half-volley that rattled the post before going in. Facundo Buonanotte then put Chelsea ahead after weaving through Lincoln’s defence to slot home.
