Italy Defence Minister Urges Pressure on Netanyahu
Italy’s Defence Minister Criticises Israeli Actions, Calls for Pressure on Netanyahu
Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has strongly condemned the ongoing situation, calling it “unacceptable” and saying it goes beyond a military operation with collateral damage to “the pure denial of the law and the founding values of our civilisation.”
Speaking to La Stampa, Crosetto emphasised Italy’s commitment to humanitarian aid but stressed the urgent need to find ways to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reconsider his approach.
On the topic of potential international sanctions against Israel, Crosetto pointed to the occupation of Gaza and serious incidents in the West Bank as a “qualitative leap” that demands decisive action. He explained that such measures would not be aimed against Israel as a nation, but rather to protect the Israeli people from a government that “has lost reason and humanity.”
The Defence Minister also urged a clear distinction between governments, states, peoples, and their religions. He compared Netanyahu’s current methods to those of Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing both as dangerously similar in their approach.
Crosetto made these remarks after Netanyahu defended his controversial plan to take control of Gaza City — a move that has drawn widespread international criticism.
On Italy’s position regarding Palestinian statehood, Crosetto defended the country’s decision not to join others in recognising a Palestinian state, warning that “recognising a state that doesn’t exist risks turning into nothing but a political provocation in a world dying of provocations.”
