Italy Strikes Disrupt Transport and Schools in Pro-Palestinian Protests
Strikes Across Italy in Solidarity with Palestinians Disrupt Transport and Schools
Several Italian cities saw transport disruptions and school closures on Monday as strikes called by a group of unions in support of the Palestinian people took effect.
In Genoa, northwest Italy, protesters waved Palestinian flags during early morning gatherings near the port, while in the Tuscan city of Livorno, workers blocked one of the port entrances in protest.
Italian dockworkers said their actions aim to prevent Italy from being used as a hub for sending arms and other supplies to Israel, which is currently engaged in military operations in Gaza.
“The Palestinian people continue to teach us lessons in dignity and resistance,” said Ricky, a member of the Autonomous Port Workers’ Collective in Genoa. “We want to learn from them and do our part,” he added.
Additional demonstrations were planned in cities across Italy throughout the day.
The strikes caused delays and cancellations on regional trains to Rome, though the Metro underground in the capital ran normally. In Milan, most Metro lines also operated without interruption, and airlines reported no disruptions.
Italy’s right-wing government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, is traditionally a strong supporter of Israel. However, growing unease within the ruling coalition has emerged over the ongoing military campaign in Gaza.
Transport Minister Matteo Salvini downplayed the protests, saying they were organized by a far-left union group and had limited impact.
