Juan Mata Joins Melbourne Victory, Eager for More Game Time
Melbourne – Veteran midfielder Juan Mata has joined A-League side Melbourne Victory, aiming to play a more central role after a quiet season with Sydney Wanderers, where he made just seven starts.
“I’m not someone who demands game time for the sake of it,” Mata said. “But I really felt the energy in the club. I felt they wanted me here. I am motivated to help this team win trophies and be part of a longer-term plan to strengthen football in the country.”
Mata brings a decorated career to Victory, having been part of Spain’s 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship-winning squads. After establishing himself as Valencia’s key player, he moved to Chelsea in 2011, winning the Champions League, Europa League, and FA Cup.
In 2015, Mata joined Manchester United for a then club-record fee of £37.1 million, helping the team secure the FA Cup, League Cup, and their first Europa League title in the 2016-17 season. He later played for Galatasaray and Vissel Kobe before heading to Australia.
Melbourne Victory, last season’s runners-up, will kick off their new campaign at home against Auckland FC on 18 October.
