K-Electric Tariff Hike Today
NEPRA to Hear CPPA Petition on Electricity Tariff Hike, Impacting K-Electric Consumers
ISLAMABAD/KARACHI – The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a petition to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), which is scheduled for a public hearing today. The proposed monthly adjustment would also affect K-Electric consumers.
According to CPPA data, Pakistan generated a total of 14.22 billion units of electricity in August, with 13.715 billion units supplied to distribution companies. The cost of supplied power was reported at Rs7.50 per unit, slightly above the reference cost of Rs7.31 per unit.
If NEPRA approves the increase, consumers could face an additional financial burden exceeding Rs3 billion.
Earlier, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan challenged NEPRA’s decision allowing K-Electric to include losses from unpaid bills and electricity theft in its tariff. The regulatory body had permitted K-Electric to recover Rs74 billion in such losses, a move critics say unfairly penalizes honest consumers.
MQM’s MPA, Muhammad Aamir Siddiqui, condemned the decision, calling it “racketeering” and “hooliganism.” He warned that regular, law-abiding consumers would now bear the cost of electricity theft, describing it as a form of collective punishment for Karachi residents.
