Karachi Traffic Paralyzed by DUET Student Protests

Student Protests Bring Traffic to a Standstill in Karachi

Karachi – Large-scale student protests erupted outside the DUET campus on Monday, causing severe traffic congestion across multiple major roads in the city. The demonstrations, organized by the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT), drew significant crowds, disrupting traffic on at least eight key arteries, including Shahrah-e-Pakistan, University Road, Sher Shah Paracha Chowk, Korangi Singer Chowrangi, and Shaheen Complex. Commuters faced hours-long delays as authorities struggled to manage the gridlock.

The protesting students demanded the immediate reinstatement of their peers who had been expelled by the university administration. They criticized the disciplinary measures, calling them “arbitrary” and unfair, and vowed to continue their protests until the university addressed their grievances.

A substantial contingent of police was deployed at DUET to maintain law and order and prevent any potential clashes during the demonstrations. Police officials remained on high alert, monitoring the situation closely to ensure that the protests remained peaceful.

Despite the heavy security presence, IJT workers expressed determination to continue their agitation, warning that they would intensify their efforts if the university administration failed to meet their demands. The protests have sparked a broader conversation among students and city residents about transparency and fairness in university disciplinary actions.

Authorities are urging commuters to seek alternate routes until the situation normalizes, as traffic is expected to remain heavy near the affected areas throughout the day.
