Karachi Police Target Misuse of Govt Cars Plate Chaos Grows

KARACHI — In a sweeping citywide operation, Karachi police have set up checkpoints at key locations to inspect government vehicles, uncovering widespread misuse and irregularities, officials confirmed on Sunday.

According to law enforcement authorities, dozens of official vehicles belonging to both the Sindh and federal governments have been stopped and searched. The inspections revealed numerous violations, including the use of unauthorized or fancy number plates, official vehicles operated by private drivers, and even Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) vehicles without number plates.

Police officials reported that the operation was launched under the directives of higher authorities to enforce transparency and uphold the rule of law. “We are verifying drivers and thoroughly checking documents at every checkpoint,” a senior officer said.

Investigations further revealed that some private vehicles were illegally fitted with official plates, while several non-customs paid (NCP) vehicles were using government registrations to evade detection.

Meanwhile, a separate controversy is brewing over the Sindh government’s mandate requiring all vehicles in the province to carry Sindh-issued number plates — a policy meant to curb vehicle theft and increase tax compliance.

However, the rollout has been anything but smooth. Citizens have reported long delays, backlogs, and increased roadside penalties due to confusion and poor coordination by the Excise Department. With no clear implementation guidelines, traffic police have issued over 52,000 challans in the past two months alone, exacerbating public frustration.

Karachi, which has more than 3.5 million registered motorcycles and 2.3 million registered cars, is struggling under the pressure of the new system, raising concerns about administrative capacity and fairness in enforcement.
