Karachi Imposes Two-Day Ban on Heavy Vehicles Amid Rabi ul Awal Processions

Karachi police have announced a complete ban on heavy traffic across the city for two days, aiming to ensure public safety during the upcoming religious gatherings.

DIG Pir Muhammad Shah informed presidents and chairmen of eight major transport associations about the decision in a formal letter. “Thousands of people participate in congregations and processions on 11 and 12 Rabi ul Awal. Many attend as pedestrians or in vehicles,” the letter stated. “To protect the public, it is necessary to suspend all heavy traffic on city roads.”

Karachi has long faced serious traffic risks involving dumpers, tankers, and other heavy vehicles, with hundreds of lives lost in accidents so far this year.

Last year, Additional Inspector General (AIG) and Police Chief Javed Alam Odho had also introduced a ban on dumper movement from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. in an effort to reduce fatal accidents. According to reports, over 900 accidents were recorded that year, with more than half resulting in deaths. Odho noted that nearly every second accident in the city leads to a fatality, highlighting a continuing challenge for law enforcement.
