LHC Questions Legality of Punjab Police’s Crime Control Department
Lahore High Court Reviews Legality of Punjab Police’s Crime Control Department
LAHORE – The Lahore High Court (LHC) has taken up a petition challenging the establishment and operations of the Crime Control Department (CCD), a specialized wing of the Punjab Police set up by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on February 26, 2025, to tackle organized and serious crime across the province.
Since its creation, the CCD has reportedly been involved in dozens of alleged encounters resulting in the deaths of suspects in various cities of Punjab.
During the hearing, LHC Chief Justice Aalia Neelum questioned the source of the claim that the department had carried out around 700 such encounters. The petitioner’s lawyer explained that the information was compiled from social media, as the CCD had not provided any official figures or records.
The counsel further argued that the creation of the CCD may violate the basic structure of the Police Order.
The petitioner’s lawyer said the petition would be amended in line with the court’s instructions. The LHC granted additional time for these changes and adjourned the hearing.
