For this reason, cats are afraid of cucumbers
Funny and popular videos of cats reacting to cucumbers when they unexpectedly appear near them while they are eating are all over social media.
Several videos demonstrate how cat owners discreetly add a cucumber to their pet’s meal. The spectators find it amusing when cats suddenly spot a cucumber close by, as they leap and flee.
According to Independent, Jill Goldman, an expert in animal behavior, claimed in an interview with the National Geographic Channel that the cats’ innate startle responses were being triggered by the cucumbers.
“With a startle response, a cat will often try to get out of there as quickly as possible and then reassess from a distance,” she explained, describing the horrifying reaction of cats.
According to the journal, Pam Johnson-Bennett, the author of Think Like a Cat, cats may become even more confused if cucumbers are placed next to their eating spots because they often link those areas with safety and security.
Goldman continued, “It’s also possible that cats will confuse the cucumber with snakes, which are dangerous predators.”
“If you cause stress to an animal that’s probably not a good thing,” Goldman said.
