Luxon Slams Netanyahu Over Gaza Crisis, New Zealand Considers Recognising Palestine

WELLINGTON — Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has strongly condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, calling the situation “utterly, utterly appalling.”

In unusually blunt remarks, Luxon added, “Netanyahu has gone way too far. I think he has lost the plot. He is not listening to the international community, and that is unacceptable.”

The comments come as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushes ahead with plans to take control of Gaza City and eliminate Hamas, describing the strategy as “the best way to end the war.” International calls for restraint have grown amid warnings from UN-backed experts of a looming famine, as Israel has heavily restricted humanitarian aid entering the territory.

The conflict escalated after the October 2023 attack on Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, drawing mounting criticism of Israel’s military response.

Meanwhile, New Zealand signalled on Monday that it may follow countries like Australia, Canada, France, and the UK in recognising a Palestinian state.

“New Zealand has been clear for some time that our recognition of a Palestinian state is a matter of when, not if,” Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters said. “Cabinet will take a formal decision in September over whether New Zealand should recognise a state of Palestine at this juncture — and if so, when and how.”
