SBCA Chief Suspended After Deadly Lyari Collapse
At a press conference, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the Chief Minister has suspended the Director General of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and asked the Home Minister to file a police case (FIR) against those involved in a recent tragic incident. He said strong action will be taken.
Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani also criticized the SBCA for not stopping illegal buildings from being constructed. He admitted that the SBCA has failed in its duty and that this failure is connected to the recent building collapse.
Ghani explained that ownership in such buildings is often complicated. For example, one building with 25 flats might have several owners and tenants, making it hard to hold anyone responsible.
He said that although the government has tried to remove illegal buildings, the SBCA is still not doing enough. He added that the government is thinking about changing the law—maybe even taking away the SBCA’s power to demolish illegal buildings and giving that job to another department.
Ghani also said that current laws are not strong enough to punish people who build illegally. Builders don’t go to jail, and the penalties are not harsh.
He suggested making the laws stricter so that both builders and those who buy or sell illegal properties can be punished. He even said that if it were up to him, he would cancel the national ID cards of such builders.
The minister warned that anyone who harms the city will face serious consequences.
About the Building Collapse in Lyari:
Earlier, the rescue operation at the site of the collapsed building in Lyari, Karachi, was completed. The six-storey building fell on the morning of July 4, 2025, in the Baghdadi area. It killed 27 people and injured 8 others, including women.
Rescue teams said all bodies have been recovered and the heavy machinery has been removed.
Officials said the area will now be sealed to avoid any more danger or problems.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has called for a full investigation into why the building collapsed. He promised strong action against anyone found guilty of negligence.
