Maryam Nawaz Announces Relief Package for Flood-Affected Families in Punjab

SARGODHA — Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday announced a comprehensive relief package for families devastated by the recent floods, pledging financial assistance, livestock compensation, and continued rescue efforts across the province.

Speaking at the inauguration of electric buses in Sargodha, she said families whose homes were destroyed will receive Rs1 million each, while those with partially damaged houses will be given Rs500,000 for reconstruction.

The chief minister added that livestock owners will also be compensated, with payments ranging from Rs200,000 to Rs500,000. Distribution of cheques, she confirmed, will begin within the next five days.

Highlighting the widespread destruction, Maryam noted that the floods have hit 27 cities and more than 5,000 villages. She credited swift government action for saving lives, saying, “Had we not acted promptly, the human loss could have been far greater.”

Relief operations, she said, facilitated the safe evacuation of 2.5 million people along with their livestock, while food and essential supplies were provided to displaced families.

Pakistan is currently grappling with one of the worst flood disasters in its history. Relentless monsoon rains, flash floods, and glacial lake outbursts have so far claimed over 800 lives and affected more than 1.2 million people nationwide. Economic damages are estimated at nearly $50 billion.

Earlier in August, Maryam Nawaz praised the coordinated efforts of rescue teams, administrative departments, and the Pakistan Army, describing the ongoing response as the “largest rescue operation in the history of Pakistan.”

She said over 600,000 people and 450,000 livestock have already been relocated to safer areas amid heavy monsoon rains and the release of floodwaters from India.
