McLaren Under Fire After Controversial Pit Strategy at Monza

Monza — McLaren once again found themselves in the spotlight during the closing stages of the Italian Grand Prix, but this time, it wasn’t for the right reasons.

The team made a conservative decision to pit Oscar Piastri before his teammate, Lando Norris. While Piastri enjoyed a lightning-fast 1.9-second stop, McLaren stumbled during Norris’ tyre change just a lap later. Adding to the controversy, Norris was then asked to let Piastri pass on the main straight, a move that didn’t sit well with fans.

F1 supporters expressed their frustration loudly, booing Norris as he made his way onto the podium at Monza.

Former driver Martin Brundle didn’t hold back either, taking a jab at McLaren’s team orders. He suggested the team might owe him a few wins from the 1990s and admitted that, as a fan, he preferred more decisive strategies.

Brundle said: “They got the sequence of lights to confirm everything was done correctly, but there was a hesitation—a rare mistake, especially considering how brilliant Oscar’s stop was. This is just racing.

“They clearly felt Lando was disadvantaged by the team’s decision, not by anything Oscar did on track, and that’s why they asked him to switch. It’s part of the sport, but fans definitely noticed.”
