MQM Condemns NEPRA Decision Allowing K-Electric to Pass Losses onto Consumers

KARACHI – The regulatory authority NEPRA has granted K-Electric permission to recover Rs74 billion in losses from electricity theft and unpaid bills, a move that is expected to raise costs for ordinary consumers.

Speaking to the media, MQM MPA Muhammad Aamir Siddiqui strongly criticized the decision, calling it “racketeering” and “hooliganism.” He described NEPRA’s ruling as unjust, arguing that it amounts to collective punishment for the residents of Karachi.

Siddiqui warned that honest consumers, who consistently pay their bills, would now be forced to shoulder the financial burden of others’ electricity theft. He also claimed that NEPRA had exceeded its authority, pointing out that even the federal government had opposed the decision.

In response, MQM has filed a petition seeking court intervention to protect the public’s rights. The petition, submitted by Siddiqui, names K-Electric as a respondent and challenges NEPRA’s SRO 1287 (I)/2025. According to the petition, the July 18, 2025, order allows K-Electric to recover line losses and theft-related costs from law-abiding consumers, placing an unfair financial burden on them.

MQM argues that the decision shifts the consequences of K-Electric’s inefficiencies onto the public, threatening residents, businesses, and industrial consumers alike. The party warns that this could further strain Karachi’s economy and worsen the challenges already faced by businesses.

The MQM petition also accused NEPRA of overstepping its mandate, describing the move as an abuse of power that unfairly punishes Karachiites for systemic failures beyond their control.
