Muharram 1447 Likely to Start June 27 Ashura on July 6
The new Islamic year, 1447 Hijri, is likely to begin on Friday, June 27, according to moon-sighting experts.
They say the moon of Muharram will not be visible on Tuesday evening, June 25, because the moon will appear in the sky at 3:31 pm that day — too early to be seen at night, especially in South Asia and the Middle East. However, in some parts of the United States, it might be seen using a telescope.
Experts believe the moon will be clearly visible on the next evening, Wednesday, June 26, so the first day of Muharram will likely be on Friday, June 27 in most countries, including Pakistan.
If this happens, the 10th of Muharram — known as Ashura — will be observed on Sunday, July 6.
To confirm this, Pakistan’s Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet on June 26 to check for moon sightings and officially announce the start of the Islamic year.
Meanwhile, the Punjab government has announced Section 144 (a ban on public gatherings) from 1st to 10th Muharram for security reasons.
Also, pillion riding (two people on one motorcycle) will not be allowed on the 9th and 10th of Muharram in Punjab.
