NEPRA Cuts Electricity Tariff Amid Karachi Load-Shedding
NEPRA (the electricity authority) has agreed to the government’s request to lower the base electricity price.
In a statement from Islamabad, NEPRA said the basic electricity rate has been reduced. They have sent this decision to the federal government, which will officially announce it soon.
The new electricity rates will start after the government makes a formal notification.
Earlier, NEPRA also reduced K-Electric’s (KE) price by Rs 2.99 per unit.
This reduction is part of the monthly fuel cost adjustment for March and will appear in electricity bills in June. It will give some relief to KE customers who are facing high electricity costs and long power outages in Karachi.
At the same time, Karachi is suffering from more unannounced load-shedding as the summer heat increases. People in the city, including politicians, are protesting.
In a recent interview, K-Electric’s CEO Moonis Alvi admitted that electricity is expensive but said it’s due to government policies, not KE’s fault.
