NEPRA Approves Rs 39.97 KE Tariff Amid Govt Concerns
NEPRA Finalizes KE Tariff Despite Govt Objections
ISLAMABAD – The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has officially notified a new multi-year tariff for K-Electric (KE), setting the average electricity supply rate at Rs 39.97 per unit, despite objections raised by the Power Division.
According to NEPRA’s notification, the distribution tariff for KE has been fixed at Rs 3.31 per unit, while the transmission tariff stands at Rs 2.86 per unit.
The decision comes amid growing concerns from the federal government, which had earlier filed an appeal challenging NEPRA’s MYT (Multi-Year Tariff) determination. The Power Division specifically objected to what it called “special concessions” granted to KE under the new tariff structure.
Last month, the federal government formally requested NEPRA to revise KE’s tariff, citing the broader impact on the national power sector.
Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari emphasized that the sector could no longer afford the inefficiencies of either private or public companies, nor could consumers bear inflated tariffs designed to offset those shortcomings.
“Our revision request is responsible and aimed at fostering a sustainable and healthy environment in the electricity distribution system,” Leghari said.
“We want a fair and transparent process that protects both the government and the consumers from undue financial strain.”
He also stressed the importance of enforcing regulatory laws across all power distribution companies (DISCOs) and reiterated the government’s commitment to securing just and balanced rates for consumers.
