At Least 60 Rescued After Migrant Boat Incident Off Northern France
Neufchatel-Hardelot, France – Around 100 people attempting to cross the English Channel on a makeshift boat were involved in a dramatic incident off the beaches south of Neufchatel-Hardelot, authorities reported.
“About 60 people are currently being cared for,” said Isabelle Fradin-Thirode, an official in nearby Montreuil-sur-Mer. A couple and their child, suffering from moderate hypothermia, were rushed to a hospital in Boulogne.
The tragedy raises the number of Channel crossing deaths to at least 25 this year, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.
Since the start of 2025, a record 31,000 migrants have reached Britain by making the perilous journey in small boats.
Under a recent Franco-British agreement, the UK can return migrants deemed ineligible for asylum, including those who have traveled through a “safe country” before reaching British shores. In exchange, London will accept an equal number of migrants from France whose asylum claims are likely to be approved.
