Pakistan Pushes Digital Growth with Telecom Spectrum Plans

Government and Telecom Leaders Meet to Boost Pakistan’s Digital Future

Islamabad — Key stakeholders from the government and telecom sector gathered at the Finance Division on Monday to discuss Pakistan’s digital transformation and the future of mobile broadband services.

The session was attended by Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Julian Gorman, Head of Asia Pacific at GSMA, who joined as a special guest.

During the meeting, GSMA and industry representatives briefed officials on the progress and potential of Pakistan’s digital transformation. A major focus of the discussion was the release of International Mobile Telephony (IMT) spectrum to strengthen next-generation mobile broadband services. Experts emphasized that a well-planned spectrum policy is crucial for enhancing exports, creating jobs, and advancing the country’s digital infrastructure.

Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb praised the insights shared by GSMA and industry leaders, emphasizing the need to adopt global best practices in developing Pakistan’s spectrum strategy. Officials also emphasized the need to expedite the spectrum release process to improve digital services nationwide.

The Ministry of Finance reaffirmed its commitment to supporting new ideas, investment, and growth in the telecom sector, aiming to position Pakistan as a strong competitor in the global digital economy.

Digital Transformation Plan in Focus

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed the federal government to engage in meaningful consultations with provincial authorities for the effective implementation of the Digital Transformation Plan. Speaking at a weekly review meeting on the cashless and digital economy, the prime minister noted that digitalization would enhance transparency and convenience for the public without incurring additional costs.
