Discos will tack on an extra Rs4.567 per unit in February
The state-run power distribution firms (Discos) were given permission by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Friday to add an additional Rs 4.567 per unit to its customers’ bills for power in February 2024.
The regulator approved the increased fees in consideration of the December 2023 Fuel Charge Adjustment (FCA). Customers are predicted to bear a financial cost of over Rs 33.88 billion as a result of this move, which could increase to almost Rs 40 billion when the 18% General Sales Tax (GST) is taken into account. It is significant to remember that all consumer groups are affected by this price hike, with the exception of lifeline customers and electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS).
Notably, the central power purchasing agency (CPPA) said in its petition on behalf of Discos that, although the real fuel cost incurred was Rs 11.0225 per unit, customers were charged a reference fuel cost of Rs 5.4031 per unit in December 2023. The Consumer Protection Association (CPPA) contends that customers should bear the increased cost burden of Rs 5.6194 per unit.
