E-bikes and rickshaws will be introduced in Punjab through the “Green Wheels Program”
The Punjab interim government’s “Green Wheels Programme” is an initiative to combat the acute air pollution problem that the area is experiencing. Acknowledging that transportation plays a major role in the pollution problem, the program intends to introduce 26,000 electric cars (EVs) into city traffic, signifying a paradigm change in favor of environmentally friendly and sustainable mobility options.
The program aims to provide access to electric bikes and rickshaws for particular groups of people, including women, people with disabilities, low-income folks, and university students. In doing so, the program fosters social justice and diversity in addition to addressing environmental issues. The choice to provide 10,000 electric motorcycles to college students shows a dedication to inspiring the next generation to choose greener modes of mobility.
Ibrahim Hasan Murad, the minister of transportation, stressed the importance of the program in lowering pollution and claimed that transportation is responsible for an astounding 70–80% of the issue. The government’s dedication to providing sustainable transportation to a wider range of people is further demonstrated by the distribution of interest-free e-bikes and e-rickshaws to women and others who qualify.
The “Green Wheels Programme” does more than only improve the environment right now; it paves the way for Punjab to become cleaner and greener in the future. The government’s goal to highlight the benefits and viability of EV adoption is emphasized by the designation of large cities as EV models. This not only sets an example for other areas but also establishes Punjab as a pioneer in adopting cutting-edge strategies to tackle air pollution.
The introduction of 26,000 electric vehicles by the Punjab government under the “Green Wheels Programme” is a comprehensive and well-thought-out program. This endeavor, which tackles social as well as environmental issues, shows the transformative power of government-led efforts in the face of urgent environmental concerns and prepares the way for a more sustainable and inclusive future.
