Islamabad – The devastating floods that swept across Pakistan between June 26 and August 30 have claimed 829 lives and injured 1,116 people, according to a recent United Nations report.

The natural disaster also wreaked havoc on property and infrastructure. Nearly 9,000 homes were damaged nationwide, while 6,138 livestock perished. Roads and bridges suffered heavy losses, with 655 kilometers of roads and 238 bridges reported destroyed.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) bore the brunt of the road damage, losing 432 kilometers, followed by Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) with 201 kilometers. Gilgit-Baltistan saw 17.6 kilometers of roads damaged, while Balochistan reported 3.6 kilometers. Bridge losses were significant in several regions: AJK lost 94, Gilgit-Baltistan 87, KP 52, and Islamabad 3, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said.

Livestock losses were particularly severe in KP, where 5,406 animals died. Other regions recorded smaller but still substantial losses: 237 in AJK, 231 in Sindh, 121 in Punjab, 67 in Gilgit-Baltistan, and 22 in Balochistan.

Housing damage was heaviest in KP, with 4,659 homes affected. Other provinces included AJK (2,010), Gilgit-Baltistan (1,253), Balochistan (671), Punjab (226), Sindh (91), and Islamabad (65).

The human toll mirrored the widespread destruction. KP reported 479 deaths and 350 injuries, Punjab 191 deaths and 599 injuries, Sindh 57 deaths and 78 injuries, Gilgit-Baltistan 41 deaths and 52 injuries, AJK 29 deaths and 28 injuries, Balochistan 24 deaths and 5 injuries, and Islamabad 8 deaths with 3 injuries.

The report underscores the scale of the catastrophe and the urgent need for continued rescue and relief efforts across the country.
