Internet Outage Hits Pakistan Amid Heavy Rain

Widespread Internet Disruption Hits Pakistan Amid Heavy Rainfall

On Tuesday evening, internet users across Pakistan, including major cities like Karachi, faced widespread connectivity issues as Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) services experienced significant disruptions.

The outage affected both online and call services, creating problems for individuals and businesses that rely heavily on digital platforms. Residents of Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Peshawar reported slow or non-existent browsing speeds, frequent connection drops, and interruptions in online services.

Many online workers and business professionals expressed frustration over the unavailability of essential applications and platforms, highlighting the growing reliance on a stable internet for work and communication.

IT and Telecom Minister Shaza Fatima acknowledged the issue, assuring the public that professional teams are investigating the cause. “We will inform the public as soon as the reasons are identified and solutions are provided,” she said.

Industry insiders suggest the disruption may be linked to a technical fault in the fiber optic backbone or issues with primary internet providers responsible for international online traffic. PTCL has yet to release an official timeline for a full restoration, but technical teams are actively working to resolve the problem.

The outage, coinciding with severe weather and heavy rains, has raised concerns about Pakistan’s IT infrastructure, especially as many rely on the internet for remote work, online education, communication with relatives abroad, and e-commerce.

Schools Closed in Karachi Amid Rainfall

Earlier, the Sindh government announced that schools across Karachi will remain closed on Wednesday due to continuous heavy rainfall. Authorities cited the risk of urban flooding and emphasized that the decision aims to ensure the safety of students and school staff during challenging weather conditions.
