Monsoon Alert Flood Risk in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather alert, warning the public to stay cautious amid the threat of urban flooding and landslides due to a strong monsoon spell forecasted from July 21 to 25.
According to the Met Office, heavy rainfall is expected to impact low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Okara, Nowshera, and Peshawar. These regions may experience flash flooding as intense downpours swell rain drains and local streams.
The weather department further cautioned that heavy rains could trigger landslides in the hilly and mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
In the past 24 hours, various parts of the country witnessed significant rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. In Sindh, Larkana received the highest rainfall at 66mm, followed by Mohenjo-Daro (35mm), Khairpur (14mm), Sukkur (13mm), Rohri (12mm), Thatta (7mm), Nagar Parkar, and Diplo (3mm each).
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balakot received 54mm of rain, while Islamabad’s Syedpur area recorded 40mm. Other areas affected included Kotli with 6mm in Kashmir and Khuzdar with 14mm in Balochistan.
The PMD has urged residents in vulnerable areas to take necessary precautions and stay updated with official advisories to avoid weather-related incidents.
