PFMA Warns Wheat Flour Prices May Rise
PFMA Warns of Further Wheat and Flour Price Hikes Without Immediate Imports
KARACHI – The chairman of the Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA), Junaid Aziz, has warned that wheat and flour prices in Pakistan could rise even further if the government does not act promptly on wheat imports.
Aziz pointed out that while wheat is available at cheaper rates in the international market, local prices remain significantly higher, putting additional pressure on flour costs for consumers.
He revealed that wheat and flour prices have already seen sharp increases over the past month. Between August 1 and September 1, the price of wheat jumped by Rs35 per kilogram, rising from Rs62 to Rs97 per kg. During the same period, flour prices surged by Rs 29 per kg.
On August 1, Grade-2.5 flour was priced at Rs 76 per kg, and it has now climbed to Rs 99 per kg. Fine flour, meanwhile, has risen from Rs 79 to Rs 108 per kg.
Currently, wheat is selling locally at Rs96 per kg, compared with Rs85 per kg on the international market, Aziz added.
The PFMA chairman stressed that the release of wheat stocks by the Sindh government next week could slightly ease local prices. However, he warned that to ensure supply stability and control inflation, Pakistan will need to import at least 1.5 million tonnes of wheat this year.
