PIA Gets UK Cargo Licence, Faces Audit Heat Over Unpaid Dues
ISLAMABAD – Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has secured approval to operate direct cargo flights from Pakistan to the United Kingdom, a development seen as a major boost for the airline’s international operations.
According to officials, the licence was granted after a joint on-site audit by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and a British inspection team. The UK Department for Transport has formally authorized PIA to run cargo services for the next five years, strengthening trade links between the two countries.
However, alongside this achievement, PIA continues to face financial scrutiny. A recent audit report revealed that the airline has failed to recover outstanding dues worth Rs. 20 billion as of June 30, 2024. The auditors criticised PIA for lacking a proper recovery plan and for not holding a Departmental Accounts Committee (DAC) meeting before finalizing the report.
To address the issue, auditors recommended that the Aviation Division be directly involved to ensure recovery of the overdue amount.
