Poland Jets Intercept Russian Drones in Airspace Breach

Poland Scrambles Jets as Russian Drones Violate Airspace

WARSAW – Tensions rose sharply in Eastern Europe after Poland scrambled fighter jets with NATO allies to intercept what it described as “hostile objects” breaching its airspace during a large-scale Russian assault on Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga warned that Moscow’s actions highlight President Vladimir Putin’s growing sense of impunity. “Putin just keeps escalating, expanding his war, and testing the West,” Sybiga wrote on X, stressing that a weak response would only embolden Russia further. He cautioned that if unchecked, Russian missiles and drones could soon reach deeper into Europe.

The airspace violation occurred as Russia launched a heavy wave of strikes across Ukraine, hitting multiple cities, including Lviv, just 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Polish border.

Poland’s military command called the breaches “unprecedented,” reporting that around a dozen drone-like objects were detected, with some successfully shot down. “This is an act of aggression that has created a real threat to the safety of our citizens,” the statement said.

While Russian drones and missiles have crossed into NATO airspace before, this marks one of the rare occasions where an allied nation responded with active defense measures.
