Jan 2024 power bill increase of Rs4.66 per unit requested
With the exception of K-Electric, power distribution companies (Discos) are seeking to place further financial strain on already overburdened power users.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) is being asked by the Discos for permission to charge customers an additional Rs4.6617 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in January 2024 bills. This requested increase is a result of the November 2023 fuel costs adjustment (FCA).
In accordance with the November 2023 FCA, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted an application to the Nepra on behalf of the Discos to increase electricity rates. On December 27, Nepra will hold a public hearing to discuss the November FCA. NEPRA has invited any interested or impacted parties to submit written or oral objections during the public hearing, as allowed by law, via a notice of the public hearing. The total amount of energy produced in November was 7,547 gigawatt-hours (GWh), valued at Rs7.1704 per unit, according to the CPPA’s application. The total cost of energy was Rs 54.113 billion.
With no power generation costs, 2,755 GWh (36.50%) came from hybrid power. Using both domestic and imported coal sources, coal-fired power plants produced 1,473 GWh (13.08%) at a total cost of Rs15 billion (Rs15.27/unit). (987 + 486 GWh).
Re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) provided 798 GWh (10.57pc) at Rs23.7171 per unit, while gas-based power plants generated 695 GWh (9.21pc) at Rs14.6197 per unit.
Furthermore, 27 GWh of power generated at a cost of Rs6 per unit came from bagasse. In November, solar power produced 50 GWh (0.66pc) while wind power generated 148 GWh (1.96pc) of the total generation.
Electricity imported from Iran accounted for 30 GWh (0.39pc) at Rs27.7281 per unit, while nuclear power sources produced 1,572 GWh (20.83pc) at Rs1.2071 per unit. Nepra received data from CPPA-G indicating that 7,288 GWh (96.57 percent) of net power was delivered to Discos in November at a cost of Rs68.834 billion, or Rs9.444 per unit.
