PTI Leaders Sentenced 10 Years in May 9 Case

Lahore Court Hands 10-Year Sentences to Key PTI Leaders in May 9 Violence Cases

Lahore – A court has sentenced several senior leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), including Shibli Faraz, Omar Ayub, and Zartaj Gul, to 10 years in prison in connection with the violent protests that erupted across Pakistan on May 9, 2023. Other PTI figures, including Kanwal Shauzab, Ahmad Chattha, Rai Hassan Nawaz, Ansar Iqbal, and Bilal Ejaz, also received 10-year sentences.

In addition, PTI MPAs Ismail Sillah and Shahid Javed were convicted and sentenced to 10 years behind bars.

However, the court acquitted prominent PTI leaders Fawad Chaudhry and Zain Qureshi, citing insufficient evidence against them.

The verdict was announced by ATC Judge Javed Iqbal in a case registered at Samanabad Police Station, which focused on violent protests during which the residence of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah was reportedly attacked.

Out of 109 accused individuals, 75 were convicted, while 34 were acquitted. Among the convicted, 59 received 10-year sentences, and 16 were handed three-year terms.

Earlier, on July 22, the Lahore Anti-Terrorism Court had sentenced PTI leaders, including Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, and Senator Ejaz Chaudhry to 10 years in prison, while acquitting Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Hamza Azim, and five others in related cases.

The recent verdict also names Ali Hassan, Afzal Azeem, Khalid Qayyum, Riaz Hussain, and former Punjab Governor Umar Sarfraz Cheema among those sentenced to 10 years.

The May 9 protests erupted nationwide following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, sparking violent clashes in major and remote cities. PTI supporters attacked army installations, including the Lahore residence of a Corps Commander, prompting authorities to deploy armed forces across Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad to restore order.
