PTI’s Independence Day Protest Plan Faces Internal Rift

ISLAMABAD – As Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) gears up for the second phase of its protests on the country’s Independence Day, growing divisions within the party threaten to undermine the movement.

National Assembly Member Sher Afzal Marwat has openly criticized the party’s leadership and strategy, warning that the upcoming protest could fare worse than the last one. Speaking to the media, he said he would not participate unless the leadership contacted him directly and removed Aleema Khan from political decision-making.

“The party has suffered because bad decisions were made with bad intentions,” Marwat remarked. He claimed that the party founder had advised against Aleema Khan’s involvement, yet “she seems to be running the entire show.”

Marwat also questioned the position of Secretary General Salman Akram, asking, “Where was Salman Akram after May 9? How can he be Secretary General? I cannot blindly follow his decisions.”

In response, PTI leader Shaukat Yousafzai defended the party’s strategy, saying the leadership had a comprehensive plan for rallies and public gatherings across various regions. “Barrister Gohar held a rally in KP, though it should have been in Islamabad. The protest policy has just started,” he said.

Despite official assurances, Marwat’s statements highlight ongoing internal discord over leadership, strategic planning, and the influence of non-elected figures. “Imran Khan is in jail, but he is the most popular leader. That is why the party lacks effective leadership, which results in ill-intentioned decisions,” he added.
