Punjab Launches AI for Smart Policing
Punjab Launches AI System to Boost Policing and Safety
LAHORE – The Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has unveiled a new artificial intelligence system, “Punjab Emergency AI,” aimed at enhancing public safety and policing across the province.
According to PSCA officials speaking to the state-run APP, the AI system will provide real-time alerts to police about areas at high risk of crimes such as robberies and thefts. It will also identify accident-prone zones and other crime hotspots, helping authorities plan patrols and deploy resources more efficiently.
DIG Operations Faisal Kamran said the initiative marks a step toward “smart policing,” bringing innovation and precision to the work of the Lahore Police. “This technology will transform the way police operate in Lahore,” he added.
Controversy Over Crime Control Department Encounters
Meanwhile, the Punjab Crime Control Department (CCD), a specialized wing of the police established on February 26, 2025, by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has come under scrutiny. The department was created to tackle serious and organized crime in the province.
A petitioner told the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday that more than 700 alleged encounters involving the CCD have occurred across Punjab in the past seven months, resulting in dozens of deaths of suspects and accused individuals.
Chief Justice Aalia Neelum of the LHC has taken up the petition, questioning both the establishment and functioning of the CCD.
The launch of Punjab Emergency AI comes as authorities look for innovative ways to strengthen law enforcement while the CCD remains under judicial review.
