Punjab Launches Air Quality Forecast System
Punjab Launches Advanced Air Quality Forecasting System to Combat Pollution
Punjab is set to introduce a state-of-the-art air quality forecasting system aimed at monitoring weather conditions and air pollution, helping authorities take timely measures to reduce pollution in the province’s major cities.
Speaking on the initiative, Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said that weekly air pollution reports will now be made public, providing residents with up-to-date information on the state of the environment.
“The forecasting system combines real-time monitoring with modern scientific modules and operates according to contemporary air quality standards tailored to local needs,” Aurangzeb explained.
The system will incorporate data from newly installed modern monitoring stations across Punjab. Currently, 41 air quality monitoring stations are operational, with plans to expand the network to 100 stations in the near future, the minister added.
Beyond tracking pollution levels, the mechanism will also guide public hygiene and health safeguards, ensuring citizens are informed about protective measures.
Aurangzeb highlighted that the system forms part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle smog. This includes stringent measures against the burning of crop residue, a practice known to significantly contribute to air pollution.
“Modern equipment will be employed to monitor air quality, pollution levels, and weather conditions effectively,” she said, underlining the government’s commitment to a cleaner and healthier environment for Punjab’s residents.
