Punjab Launches Electric Taxi Scheme, Plans Tram and Green Transport Expansion

Lahore — Punjab is set to roll out an electric taxi scheme within the next 15 days, offering new earning opportunities, especially for unemployed individuals. The initiative, unveiled at Pakistan’s first-ever Transport Expo, is a key part of the province’s Transport 2030 Vision, aimed at modernizing public transport and cutting carbon emissions.

Under the scheme, new electric taxis and bikes will be introduced with flexible ownership options. To support low-income groups, officials confirmed that the vehicles will be available through interest-free instalments.

Provincial Minister Bilal Yasin also revealed plans for Lahore’s first tram service, expected to begin operations by February next year. The tram will initially run along Jail Road and Main Boulevard, with future expansion planned for Canal Road.

The Transport Expo also highlighted other major projects:

Construction of 41 modern depots across Punjab districts.

Deployment of electric buses starting in December 2025.

Introduction of 1,100 electric buses and trams by 2030.

Development of 1,000 EV charging stations.

Testing of driverless autonomous vehicles.

The Punjab government has set a target to make 80% of its transport network electric by 2030, positioning the province at the forefront of eco-friendly and inclusive urban mobility.

Meanwhile, in Sindh, Labour Minister Shahid Thaheem announced that 10,000 free electric motorcycles will be distributed to female industrial workers. The move is part of the Sindh Workers Welfare Board’s effort to boost women’s mobility and promote sustainable transport solutions.
