Punjab Rivers on High Flood Alert
Punjab Rivers Face Critical Flood Situation as Water Levels Surge
Lahore — Several rivers across Punjab are witnessing dangerously high water levels, raising fears of severe flooding in multiple regions.
According to the Flood Forecasting Division, the situation is most critical at Head Panjnad, where water flow has surged to 564,000 cusecs, marking an extremely high flood level.
In the Chenab River, water flow at Head Marala has reached 84,000 cusecs, while Head Khanki and Qadirabad are each recording 145,000 cusecs. At Chiniot, about 95,000 cusecs are passing through, whereas Head Trimmu is facing an alarming rise with 543,000 cusecs.
The Ravi River is also swelling rapidly. At Jassar, the flow stands at 45,000 cusecs, while Shahdara has climbed to 90,000 cusecs, creating a high flood situation. At Head Balloki and Head Sidhnai, flows have increased to 139,000 cusecs and 123,000 cusecs, respectively, both considered extremely high flood levels.
Meanwhile, the Sutlej River poses another major threat. At Ganda Singh Wala, the water flow has reached a dangerous 319,000 cusecs, while Head Sulemanki and Head Islam are reporting 135,000 cusecs and 120,000 cusecs, respectively.
Authorities have issued flood warnings for vulnerable areas and urged residents near riverbanks to stay alert and strictly follow safety advisories as rivers continue to swell.
The crisis has been aggravated by India’s release of additional water into the Sutlej River, which Pakistan describes as a violation of the Indus Waters Treaty. Officials fear this “water aggression” could trigger another major flood wave downstream of the Harike and Ferozepur barrages.
According to reports, the Indian High Commissioner has officially notified Islamabad about the situation, but local authorities remain on high alert as Punjab braces for possible large-scale flooding.
