Floodwaters Breach Airport Boundary as Punjab Faces Worsening Crisis

ISLAMABAD – Floodwaters breached a protective embankment on the southern side of an airport, entering part of its premises, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) has been issued to alert airlines and relevant authorities. Despite the breach, the airport spokesperson assured that the runway, terminal building, and parking area remain safe.

“All equipment is secure, and staff, along with available machinery, have been mobilised to manage the situation. Work is underway to drain out the water,” the spokesperson said.

Earlier, district administrations in Gujrat and Sialkot declared a public holiday as flooding worsened across Punjab. Heavy inflows from India into the Sutlej and Chenab rivers have raised the alarm, with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issuing an extraordinary flood warning for the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers.

NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider confirmed that more than 190,000 people have been evacuated from flood-hit areas so far. Rescue efforts also saved 20 people trapped under Shahbazpur Bridge in Gujrat, Deputy Commissioner Noor-ul-Ain Qureshi said.

Mobile phone networks remain down in several areas of Gujarat, while internet services are slow or unavailable.

Meanwhile, following India’s release of water into the Ravi, the Pakistan Army has been called in to assist civil authorities. Army units have been deployed across seven districts as rising river levels continue to pose a serious threat to lives and property.
