Punjab Grapples with Floods as Thousands Fall Ill; CM Maryam Nawaz Oversees Relief Efforts
Parts of Punjab are facing severe flooding following the sudden release of water into the Sutlej and Ravi rivers by India.
Health officials report that over 9,000 cases of various infectious diseases have emerged in Lahore alone in the past 24 hours.
Provincial Health Minister Khawaja Imran Nazir said medical camps have been set up across Punjab to provide treatment and preventive care in the hardest-hit areas. “Sufficient stocks of medicines are available in all affected regions,” he assured. He also instructed teams from the Health and Population Department to remain on 24/7 alert to manage the growing health emergency.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is personally overseeing the province’s relief and health operations, officials said.
In related efforts, CM Maryam Nawaz ordered immediate upgrades to rescue boats operating on the Ravi River after inspecting them firsthand. She highlighted several shortcomings during the review and directed that they be addressed without delay.
The chief minister emphasized the importance of equipping all rescue boats with reliable wireless communication systems, noting that relying on mobile networks during emergencies is insufficient. She ordered proper wireless systems to be installed on every boat as a priority.
