Rawalpindi, Faisalabad Hit Hard by Heavy Rainfall; Public Holiday Declared
RAWALPINDI – Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema has announced a public holiday in Rawalpindi due to relentless monsoon rainfall and dangerous weather conditions. In a public notification, he urged citizens to stay indoors and avoid all non-essential travel as rescue and drainage operations continue across the city.
Over 200 millimeters of rain have already been recorded in Rawalpindi, with more rainfall expected in the coming hours. Emergency teams remain active on the ground, working to clear flooded areas and respond to urgent calls for assistance.
Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner had issued an advisory warning residents to remain inside for the next two to three hours, highlighting the severe risk posed by the downpour.
Meanwhile, Faisalabad has witnessed at least 11 fatalities and over 20 injuries in the last two days due to roof collapses triggered by the heavy rain. The deceased include multiple family members, such as a husband and wife, a mother and daughter, two brothers, and a mother and son.
One particularly tragic incident occurred on Thursday morning in G Block, Allama Iqbal Colony, where the roof of a two-story house collapsed. The accident claimed the lives of 17-year-old Muhammad and 11-year-old Musab Hussain. Their father, Khalid (50), mother Farhana, and sister Shanza (12) were injured.
Rescue officials continue to operate in dangerous conditions, urging the public to remain cautious and avoid risky areas.
