Putin Blames West for Ukraine Crisis as SCO Leaders Gather in Tianjin

TIANJIN – Russian President Vladimir Putin has once again accused the West of fueling the ongoing Ukraine crisis, saying it was not Moscow’s attack that triggered the conflict but rather a coup in Ukraine, which he claimed was backed and provoked by Western powers.

Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, Putin also criticized what he called Western efforts to pull Ukraine into NATO, describing it as another key factor behind the crisis.

The summit brought together leaders from ten SCO member states, who posed for a traditional group photograph on a red carpet before the opening session. In live footage, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Putin, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were seen chatting with the help of translators, while another moment captured Modi holding hands with Putin.

In his opening address, President Xi pledged that China would work with all SCO partners to strengthen the forum and advance what he called a “new global security order.” Xi said the SCO had set an example of international cooperation and stood firmly against external interference.

The summit, attended by leaders from Central Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, was billed as a major display of solidarity among countries of the Global South. Xi emphasized the need for constructive participation in global affairs, rejection of hegemonism, and the promotion of multilateralism as guiding principles for the future.
