Saudi Residency Crackdown
Saudi Arabia Intensifies Crackdown on Residency, Labour, and Border Violations
RIYADH – Saudi authorities have launched a wide-scale crackdown targeting individuals found violating residency, labour, and border security laws, the General Directorate of Passports (Jawazat) confirmed.
Officials said those detained were involved in offences such as using expired or invalid residency permits, engaging in unauthorised employment, and attempting illegal border crossings.
The Ministry of Interior emphasised that the campaign reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to enforcing immigration and labour regulations. Depending on the severity of the violations, penalties include imprisonment, deportation, and financial fines.
Authorities also issued a strong warning to Saudi citizens and legal residents against assisting violators in any way, including offering jobs, shelter, or transportation. Those found guilty could face harsh consequences — up to 15 years in prison, fines of up to SAR 1 million, and confiscation of any vehicles or property used in the offence.
To encourage compliance, the Ministry assured the public that all reports of violations will remain confidential, and informants will not face legal consequences. Citizens are urged to report violators by calling 911 in Makkah, Riyadh, Madinah, and the Eastern Province, or 999/996 in other regions.
The crackdown is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader effort to regulate its labour market and strengthen border security. Within just one week in August, authorities recorded 22,222 violations across the Kingdom — including 13,551 related to residency, 4,665 linked to border offences, and 4,006 concerning labour laws.
Separately, the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing has rolled out a new digital platform allowing citizens to submit objections to municipal violations electronically through the Unified Objections Platform.
