SC Rejects Plea to Halt Fawad Chaudhry’s Trials
Supreme Court Refuses to Stop Fawad Chaudhry’s Trials
The Supreme Court, with a three-member bench led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, has refused to stop the ongoing trials against Fawad Chaudhry. The court said that the decision to stop the trials should be made by the High Court, not the Supreme Court.
Chief Justice Afridi said both sides must be present before any ruling is made so that no one’s rights are harmed. He called Fawad Chaudhry and the lawyer for the Punjab government to meet him in his private chamber for further discussion.
The Chief Justice added that he would try to satisfy both parties. He also said that the courts have been working late at night, even till midnight, as mentioned by Fawad. He noted that Fawad should appreciate that courts are still working, even though some worry that a Supreme Court decision might affect both sides.
Afridi said he received reports from the anti-terrorism courts and found some of Fawad’s earlier arguments surprising. He pointed out that all courts had already looked at Fawad’s requests to be excused from appearing.
He also reminded everyone that cases are already being handled and that people can now attend hearings via video from any city.
Sanam Javed Granted Bail by Lahore High Court
In a separate case, the Lahore High Court gave bail to PTI activist Sanam Javed. She was accused of posting anti-state content on social media and encouraging violence against government institutions.
Justice Farooq Haider granted her bail with a bond of Rs500,000.
What Happened on May 9
On May 9, 2023, protests and violence broke out all over Pakistan after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Angry PTI workers protested in cities and remote areas. The army was called in to control the situation in places like Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad.
During these protests, army buildings—including the house of the Lahore Corps Commander—were attacked.
It’s important to note that Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, is the main accused in all cases related to the May 9 riots.
