Scarlett Johansson on Robert Redford’s Impact
Scarlett Johansson Reflects on Her First Role with Robert Redford and His Lasting Inspiration
Hollywood superstar Scarlett Johansson recently opened up about her very first film experience, sharing heartfelt memories of working with legendary actor and director Robert Redford nearly three decades ago.
Johansson made her screen debut in 1998 at just 11 years old in the neo-western drama The Horse Whisperer, directed by Redford himself. She played the role of Grace Maclean, while Redford portrayed Tom Booker, guiding her through the early stages of her career.
Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday, September 22, Johansson reflected on the impact Redford had on her, describing him as a lasting source of inspiration.
“It was when I was working with Bob. I remember seeing him on the set. He would have those intimate conversations with me, and then he would be coordinating a huge scene…” she recalled.
The 40-year-old actress also shared that watching Redford on set inspired her to try her hand at directing. Johansson is set to make her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great, which premieres on Friday, September 26.
She added with a touch of humor, “It was like, ‘That job seems pretty interesting. I’d like to do that job someday.’ And then I spent many years being like, ‘Who would ever want that job?! You’re basically just answering questions.’”
Johansson praised Redford’s character, saying, “He was such a warm, kind, patient, generous, wonderful man, and he would take so much time with me every day.”
Earlier this month, the film world mourned the loss of Robert Redford. The iconic actor, director, and Sundance Institute founder passed away at the age of 89 at his home in Sundance, Utah, surrounded by loved ones. His publicist, Cindi Berger, confirmed his death but did not disclose the cause.
Redford leaves behind a remarkable legacy, remembered both as a Hollywood leading man and a champion of independent cinema.
