SHC Stays Jahangiri Degree Case
SHC Suspends Cancellation of Justice Jahangiri’s Law Degree
KARACHI – The Sindh High Court (SHC) has halted the implementation of Karachi University’s decision to revoke the law degree of Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, providing interim relief until the case is concluded.
Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro heard the petition on Friday and issued a stay order against the recommendations of the university’s Unfair Means Committee (UMC) and Syndicate. The court barred any action against Justice Jahangiri until further proceedings.
During the hearing, Karachi University Registrar Prof. Imran Siddiqui appeared before the bench and sought more time to file a response, explaining that the institution had received the court notice only two days earlier.
While the petitioner’s counsel did not oppose the request, he urged the court to suspend the cancellation order in the meantime.
Justice Kalhoro questioned the fairness of the process, asking whether Jahangiri had been allowed to defend himself. “What if action is taken against the petitioner during this period? If the order is later overturned, who will repair the damage? This concerns a man’s entire career,” he remarked.
The judge further observed that the degree cancellation could have been driven by personal motives. He stressed the importance of due process, noting that even if a complaint surfaces decades later, the affected party must be heard. “A judicial decision without hearing all sides carries no value. An ex parte judgment cannot be considered a good judgment,” he added.
The SHC adjourned the case until November 20.
